Charcoal is the least-efficient, least-satisfying, most-wasteful way to cook.
It’s always delicious, though, if you do it right.
But really. Don’t bother. Just cook food. If you’re not making some sort of ceremony, and you’re not looking to preserve ashes... why would you do this.

I have 2 grills, one propane for when I just need to cook something fast and the other charcoal for when I want it to taste really good.
I love my komado grill and use lump charcoal in it and it’ll get low enough to smoke or hit high enough to make amazing pizza or sear the hell out of some meat.

If I’m just grilling for myself (read: most of the time), I’m going with the propane grill, unless there’s a really nice steak involved. Propane just doesn’t get quite as hot.
Also, a wok plopped on top of a loaded charcoal chimney is the shiznit, if the alternative is using said wok on an electric stove.

When I want to sear meat to perfection, I use a salt block. I’m not really cooking good stuff, here, just using a kettle grill for the first time in years and trying to do some decent cooking with it. Time was short, results are ... fine, I guess.

Very true, but m y ideal kitchen would have a gas cooktop/electric oven.

I threw one of my iron pans on it, and would have used it for a lot, had there been some time to do it.

Those grills are just the normal ones in Japan, I look at them for sale and I’m sure they just rebrand them for Americans. Most are green and look like a Gojira egg or something.

Hm , didn’t know that was an option. But I’ve never had a gas oven with a broiler worth a damn, either.

Yeah, I use the akorn Jr, if you're cooking only a couple pounds of meat at a time it's great and only $150.

I enjoy cooking with our Akorn. The charcoal gives it a decent taste and it’s easy to do slow cooks.
I don't understand propane grilling. I might as well just use my gas stove top.

I like my Akor n. Used an egg and an Akorn and saw no reason to spend significantly more for ceramic

I didn’t get why my wife wanted this, but now I done Seent The Light. I have always loved gas stoves and the electric oven is excellent.
The best part is that we can still cook if the power is out.

I want to start smoking my meats, i am going to get a pellet grill. Charcoal is so difficult to deal with although it does give great flavor.

Though my apartment complex has several gas grills (not actually sure if they are propane or natural gas), I mostly just sous vide steaks and then sear in a cast iron skillet. Burgers frequently just get cooked in a pan. I don’t think I’ve cooked with charcoal since my parents sold my late grandfather’s house on the C ape (charcoal cooking fits much better with the slow pace of a vacation I think).

I’ve been using a charcoal W eber kettle for a few years now after using only propane and I’m a convert .
It takes me maybe 10 min longer to get the coals going, but once they’re going I have way more control over the fire. I can arrange the coals in dozens of different ways to arrange the heat zones how I want, I can also use more or less coals to control temperature.
I still have my propane grill but unless I’m really pressed for time I find myself always using charcoal.

Want to know something even worse? They often aren’t even real meat...
Though frankly beef tends to do better in the pan than the various plant-based burgers, which seem to be more prone to sticking (and fall apart more when unstuck).

Many apartment communities ban gas and charcoal grills as a fire safety precaution. Electric grills were generally acceptable at most.

What wears out after 2 years? I've had mine for at least 5 years and it has held up better than my neighbor's egg. Mine is the larger one. Has anything gone wrong with your Jr.?

The grates rusted out of the bottom of mine. Probably my fault since I leave the not completely burnt charcoal in it to finish later and let it get rained on a few times.
I also use mine a lot, usually 2-3 times a week year round so it gets a lot of heat cycles put through it. I imagine it’s quite hard on the unit when it’s 20F outside and I heat it up to cook something .

I’ve had the same problem, I’ll admit. I haven’t tried Beyond burgers yet, but every other plant-based patty I’ve done actually goes in the toaster oven first, then onto a hot pan to finish.
How’s that for blaspehmy.

That’s surprising. Ours is covered from rain and sun but I keep the coals in it too. I wonder if the manufacturer would have sent you new grates. Did you contact them?
